Lipid profile testing is a recommended yearly test for individuals who are at risk for, have been affected by, or have a predisposition for cardiovascular disease. This test is used to measure the levels of lipids, or fatty substances, in the blood.
PARAMETERS
This includes total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides.
Total cholesterol is the amount of cholesterol in blood, calculated by the sum of LDL, HDL, and a small amount of other lipids.
LDL cholesterol, commonly known as “bad” cholesterol, contributes to plaque, an accumulation of fatty substances that can clog arteries and lead to heart disease and stroke.
HDL, also known as “good” cholesterol, helps remove LDL from the blood and prevent plaque from building up. Triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood produced by the body to provide energy.
High triglycerides can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.
When should we get a Lipid Profile test done?
The lipid profile test helps doctors and patients identify lipid abnormalities, which can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. A patient’s general health and family medical history are used to determine the appropriate cholesterol level.
Treatments
such as lifestyle changes and medications, can reduce cholesterol levels and help prevent heart disease and stroke. Lifestyle modifications, like increased physical activity and making healthier food choices, can do wonders for a patient’s lipid profile. A diet low in saturated fat, trans fats, and cholesterol, and rich in fish, nuts, whole grains, and other healthy fats, can improve cholesterol levels. Regular exercise, such as walking and performing other aerobic activities, can also help lower cholesterol. Medications, such as statins, can be prescribed to help lower LDL levels. However, medications should usually be used as an adjunct to lifestyle modifications and not as a replacement for them. As with any medication, there are possible side effects, including muscle pain and liver damage. The lipid profile test can help identify lipid abnormalities that could lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. Through lifestyle modifications and, when necessary, medications, patients can lower their cholesterol levels and reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke. Knowing your lipid profile can help you make healthier decisions and keep your heart healthy.
Blood sample for lipid profile:
A fasting blood sample should be collected in the morning after an overnight fast of at least 8-10 hours. No food or drinks should be consumed other than water during the fasting period.
